Randy found a caterpillar out in the yard and stuck it in Taysom's bug catcher thing. Within a few days it had spun a chrysalis and all the kids were amazed especially the little ones! This was the first time they had seen this magical thing happen! We waited a couple weeks and then one morning, we saw a crack and a in a few hours a wet, colorful butterfly climbed out! We watched it exercise its wings and saw the extra ink drop off as it dried. Every time I went past the front porch that day someone else was crouched down watching the butterfly. Sawyer made a pathway of flowers for it to climb on and Zoe pushed a petunia with her tiny fingers inside the cage. It was later that night that Addison and Taysom added sugar water to the cage to feed it.
The next day, I moved him to my hanging basket so he could try flying. Unfortunately, his wings are a little messed up, but maybe that means he'll stay around longer. This was one of those summer days where everything in the world seems right because we could spend the day together watching the miracle of the butterfly.
